Curriculum

Curriculum of this program conforms to that of “The Graduate Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences”, Tohoku University. The contents of lectures are related to the circulation of volatile components. The project has three goals: (1) to enhance the ability to conduct cutting-edge research; (2) to develop the ability for interdisciplinary study; and (3) to develop communication skills and leadership. The compulsory subjects of this project include four credits in the classes “Advanced Course on Environmental and Earth Science I, II” provided in English, in addition to the subjects normally studied in each department. Intensive courses will be provided whenever appropriate, including lectures by BGI and other world-leading teachers. In addition to the assigned research programs of the regular course students, students of this program will be required to receive compulsory internship training entitled “Advanced Experiment on Environmental and Earth Science I” at BGI for more than three months in total. The “Practical Course on Environmental and Earth Science” will require students’ self-motivating planning of seminar, workshop, field excursions and participation in them. One concrete goal of the project is to train students to be able to lead discussions in English at international conferences and other similar occasions. The “Advanced Experiment on Environmental and Earth Science II” is a subject that grants a “Research visit (6 credit points)” certification to BGI students who have conducted research in their doctoral course for at least three months at Tohoku University.

Name of Lecture (和文)環境・地球科学特殊講義I
(英文)Advanced Lecture on Environmental and Earth Science I
University to provide Tohoku University
Credit(S) 2
Instructor (Japanese Side)Prof. Michihiko NAKAMURA; Prof. Tomoki NAKAMURA; Prof. Motohiko MURAKAMI; Asso. Prof. Akio SUZUKI
(German Side)Prof. Daniel FROST; Prof. Tomoo KATSURA; Prof. Hans KEPPLER; Catherine McCAMMON・AD
Content To understand the global circulation of volatile elements, we provide lectures in English including the latest research outcomes on:
(1) Migration theory of volatile elements in the crust and upper mantle, transfer of volatile elements between the interior and atmosphere/ocean of the Earth through volcanic activity;
(2) Abundance of volatile components in the Earth’s deep interior and their influence on the core/mantle dynamics;
(3) Characteristics of volatile components contained in extraterrestrial materials and the roles of volatile elements in early solar system evolution.
Graduate students are expected to acquire not only the ability to conduct cutting-edge research but also communication skills through discussion-based lectures with German students attending simultaneously.
Credit points are allocated to the first subject that each graduate student selects from the above (1) to (3) for the lecture.

Content Credit points are granted when students of Tohoku University engage in doctoral research for a total of 3 months or longer in the University of Bayreuth while attending the doctoral course. This is a prerequisite for granting the Jointly Supervised Degree through the Graduate Program in Earth and Environmental Science. The students select their research subject from the available subjects prepared by the faculty staff of Tohoku University and determine the details in consultation with the faculty staff. The students conduct experiments and analyses and can receive advice from faculty staff of the University of Bayreuth. The outcomes of the research will be presented at a symposium or school next year or later, and discussed with the students of the University of Bayreuth in order to prepare a doctoral thesis in Tohoku University.

Content In Tohoku University, students of the University of Bayreuth conduct doctoral course research regarding the circulation of volatile elements for a total of 3 months or more. Credit points are awarded corresponding to the IRTG Research Visit. For example, the students carry out ultrahigh-pressure experiments using a synchrotron facility and/or conduct analyses on experimental samples using a secondary ion mass spectrometer. The students select their research subject from the available subjects prepared by the faculty staff of the University of Bayreuth and determine the details in consultation with the faculty staff of Tohoku University as well.
